Process Paper
When we were first introduced to the theme of ‘leadership and legacy,’ I immediately picked The Beatles to be my topic. After realizing that The Beatles have a lasting legacy but aren’t really known for their leadership qualities, I decided to switch my topic. I chose Dr. José Rizal because he is considered the greatest national hero of my home country, the Philippines. I thought it would be a great experience to learn more about Dr. Rizal because it would allow me to learn more about the history of the country as well.
I spent most of my time researching in the school library at school. I started conducting my research by looking up basic biographical information on Dr. Rizal and learned a lot about his personal life and life works. I began to cite all the sources I’ve gathered information from and added them to my bibliography using noodle tools. I also checked out 2 books from my school library on Philippine history. I found these books by skimming the shelves of books that covered different countries and was pleased to find a book on the history of the Philippines which included sections on José Rizal. At home, I continued my research online and found a site where handwritten works of Rizal were published and cited them as secondary sources. I began to think of the best way to present all my research and I figured a website would be a great way to do it.

Originally, I was planning to do an exhibit. I changed my mind (no surprise) and decided to create a website instead. I chose to do a website instead of an exhibit mainly because I felt like I could put so much more info and visuals on a web page. I’m not the most tech savvy person so of course I wasn’t sure how I’d do with the actual construction of the website. However, not being super affiliated with website construction only added on to this learning experience and I slowly began to navigate my way through the construction process. I had fun messing around with the layout of the pages and choosing the theme, visuals, and am currently planning on incorporating some interactive activities on the site as well.
My topic relates to the theme “leaders and legacy in history” in obvious ways. José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda demonstrated leadership skills as he sought independence from the Spaniards that were occupying the Philippines. He was also involved in various reform movements such as establishing the “La Liga Filipina” or the League of Filipinos in 1892. His efforts of reform angered the Spaniards and were one of the main reasons that resulted in the execution of Rizal in 1896. “Rizal Day” is a Philippine national holiday which is celebrated every December 30th to commemorate the works and legacy left behind by the Filipinos’ hero, José Rizal.
