On December 30, 1896 at 7:00am, José Rizal was shot before a firing squad
Did You Know?
The firing squad was comprised of FILIPINO soldiers that were in the Spanish army. Another set of soldiers stood by just in case the executioners failed to do their job. Before any shots were fired, Rizal requested that he faced the firing squad as they shot him. His request was denied.
Rizal's last words were: "Consummatum Est" These were the words of Jesus Christ, and it means "it is finished" or "it is done." As the shots were fired, Rizal made an attempt to turn around to face the squad but was unsuccessful due to the impact of the bullets causing his inability to move. His official time of death was 7:30 am. ***note the clip to the left is a scene from the 1998 movie, "José Rizal ." |
